A file won't open

Fix errors when opening or importing a spreadsheet.

  • "This file isn't a valid Excel workbook (.xlsx) or is damaged" — the file is corrupt or not an .xlsx. Old .xls files must be saved as .xlsx in another program first.
  • "Files with macros or ActiveX controls can't be stored" — save it as .xlsx without macros.
  • "This file was blocked because it contains malware" — the file is infected.
  • "This spreadsheet doesn't exist or isn't shared with you" — ask the owner to share it, or check your account.
  • "The file looks malformed" — the file expands to a huge size and wasn't opened for safety.
