Send and read encrypted messages

Encrypt a message to recipients who have keys, and read encrypted mail you receive.

Send

  1. Set up encryption and unlock your keys.
  2. Write your message. Barid looks for each recipient's key; each recipient shows whether a key was found.
  3. When all recipients have keys, the lock turns on automatically. You can switch it off for one message.
  4. Select Send.

Attachments and inline images are encrypted too. Your Sent copy is encrypted to you.

If some recipients have no key, Barid asks what to do: send separately, Password-protect for them, send unencrypted, or cancel.

Read

Encrypted messages show a lock in the list. Open one and unlock your keys if asked. A badge shows whether the signature is valid.

Note

The server still sees who writes to whom, the date and the size. Encrypted messages can't be searched by their content.

Contacts' keys

Barid finds keys automatically from recipients' domains and from signed mail you receive. You can also add a key under Settings › Encryption › Contacts' keys.
