Write scripts that change sheets, add menus, react to edits and create your own functions.

  1. On the Automate tab, open the Script editor.
  2. Write JavaScript with the SpreadsheetApp API. The editor offers completion, help and examples.
  3. Choose a function and select Run.

What scripts can do

  • Read and change cells, formats, sheets, filters and named ranges.
  • Add custom menus with onOpen, react to edits with onEdit.
  • Show dialogs and ask questions.
  • Create custom functions you can use in formulas, like =DOUBLE(A1).

Scripts are saved with the spreadsheet. Each person approves a script before it runs for them, and a run is one undo step.
